Pieper-DanielThe Principality of Monaco captured their first ever U18 European Championship Division C title with a convincing 66-38 victory overGibraltar in the title game.

Lakic Perovanovic paced Monaco with 24 points and six steals whileDaniel Pieper had 18 points and 17 rebounds and Alessandro Generale collected 17 points, 13 rebounds and seven steals.

Thomas Yome scored 16 points for Gibraltar and Aaron Santos added six points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals and four blocks.

Pieper was named the MVP of the tournament and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammate Generale, Gibraltar’s Yome, Roger Riera from hosts Andorra and Igor Biordi from San Marino. The team of Gibraltar was given the Fair Play Award.

Gibraltar, who also lost in the 2009 Division C final, led the final 5-2 and 9-7 in the first quarter before Monaco closed on a 7-0 run for a 14-9 lead after 10 minutes.

Monaco, whose previous best showing was fourth place last summer, allowed just three points in the second quarter and started to run away with a 31-12 advantage at the break.

The lead continually grew and was up to 30 points at 50-20 in the third quarter and as many as 32 points in the fourth.

In classification game action, hosts Andorra beat San Marino 51-46 to take third place while Malta held on 63-58 against Wales to finish fifth.
